CELEBRATION OF ATHLETES
The annual Celebration of Athletes was held on Monday night at Dick Price Stadium at Norfolk State University . Thousands of athletes attended the event that included a few finals in track and field events and a relay race pitting pairs of athletes from each of the sports against each other. BOYS BASKETBALL (15U)
Two Peninsula teams finished undefeated in pool play that concluded Monday. The Boo Williams Summer League Blue won Pool C with a 4-0 record and defeated Inner Strength of Georgia 85-59 to conclude pool action. Peninsula Wolfpack also went 4-0 to win Pool A and defeated Petersburg Elite Stars 71-37 to win its pool. Championship bracket action begins Tuesday with the finals set for Wednesday afternoon.
Boo Williams Summer League Miracles advanced to the winners bracket final on Tuesday morning with a 69-56 victory over the Wichita Spooks. BWSL will face Team NC on Tuesday at 10 am at Midtown Community Center in the battle of the lone undefeated teams.
TRACK AND FIELD
Four national records were set on day three of track and field at Dick Price Stadium. Robert Griffin, III of Coppernas Grove, Tx. smashed the 400 hurdles record for intermediate boys (15-16 yo) with a 52.16. Â¦ Chalese Davis of Antioch , Ca. tied the record in the Sub-Youth (12-13) Girls 200 hurdles at 28.22. Â¦ Alexa Harmon-Thomas of Lawrence, Ks. set the bantam girls (9-10) high jump record at 4-10. Â¦ Shadayzha Bullock of Gainesville , FL set the sub-bantam girls (8-9) shot put record at 29-Â½ .
Shakia Forbes of Hampton , Va. won the Young Women's Long Jump (17-18 yo) with a leap of 19-7Â¾. She took the title by 6Â½-inches over Shamika Kentish of Virginia Beach who jumped 19-1Â¼ .
Nicole Saunders of Newport News , Va. and Allyssa Pickett of Hampton qualified second and sixth for the Young women's 400 hurdles. Saunders ran a 1:01.23, while Pickett was clocked in 1:04.60.
